The Horsefly River Roundtable brought back their Salmon Egg Float on Father’s Day June 16.

A small crowd gathered to follow the bright red balls down the spawning channel, with small eddies and overhanging branches snagging some balls out of the running in the race for the finish.

Three hundred and 20 tickets were sold for the fundraising event, this year raising money for a bridge replacement on the river walk trail.

Each ticket number corresponded to a ball and the balls were then released on the spawning channel, with a system set up further downstream to catch the bright red “salmon eggs” once they crossed the finish line.

The first person whose ball crossed the line first won $500, second place took home $300 and four people won prizes of $100 each in cash.

A very light rain fell for part of the race, but it was barely noticed by the onlookers.

Ernie Gruhs announced the winners once they were official. Robin Hawes won first, Emmet Collens won second, Dennis Kearney, Judy Hiliby, Ray Englund, and Karen Bensch all shared third place prizes.

The Horsefly River Roundtable is a non profit organization working to conserve, protect and restore the Horsefly River watershed.

The group also does education and maintains a park and river walk trail on the Horsefly River.

The organization is always looking for volunteers, goods, and funds to help support their work in the watershed.
