Students in the Cariboo will do their part by planting 1,000 trees to mark Earth Day 2024.

Williams Lake area realtor Trevor Bigg has secured a donation of seedlings from Prifor Management Ltd. and will be distributing them on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, to schools that have signed up to be part of the project.

“We were trying to find a way to mark Earth Day with new and exciting event and give back to the community,” Bigg said.

Bigg reached out to the schools and said the response has been good.

“This is one way for us to respond the to the wildfires in our region. Hopefully the students will go with a friend or family member and find a spot where they can plant the trees.”

Cataline School students, for example, will plant 50 of the 325 trees the school ordered to fill a ravine on the school property, he said.

Thompson Rivers University ordered 50 trees, he added.

Earth Day has always been something for Bigg and his wife Amanda Bigg.

For several years they have planned city-wide garbage pickups in Williams Lake but found people are very good at doing that on their own.

April 22, 2024 marks the 54th anniversary of Earth Day which always has a goal to bring people together to inspire change when humans stop to think of the planet.

The theme for 2024 is Planet versus Plastic.
